Beauties Of The Valley-Sinhagad Valley,Pune.

Asian Paradise Flycatcher (Terpsiphone paradisi)

Hello everyone,
This place was on my list for a long time, Finally the visit materialized on a long weekend sometime in January 2015. I was very excited as I had heard a lot about this place, started early morning at around 6:15 A.M. It took me nearly 40 minutes to reach this place after traveling some 20 odd kilometers. It was a pleasant morning, after venturing the valley in about 2 hours saw almost all the expected species except this beauty.I was a little disappointed as this was supposed to be a confirmed sighting.Started walking back, did not want to miss this beauty but somehow I knew that I would surely find at least one individual. And yes!! on my way back to the entrance a rufous male of this species obliged me with its presence. What beauty! Couldn't manage a decent shot of that one but I kept looking and finally spotted this beauty busy feeding on insects.Subsequently I saw two more males and one female. This was enough to make my day :) After reaching the entrance decided to sit by the stream which resulted in some good shots of oriental Magpie Robin, Tree pipit etc.
In short my visit to the valley lived up to its expectations. After a refreshing cup of tea at Sinhagad base returned home with a lot of memories.I am surely going to visit this place again whenever I get a chance.

Some info about this bird: The Asian paradise flycatcher (Terpsiphone paradisi) is a medium-sized passerine bird native to Asia. Males have elongated central tail feathers, and in some populations a black and rufous plumage while others have white plumage. Females are short-tailed with rufous wings and a black head. They feed on insects, which they capture in the air often below a densely canopied tree. This bird is a local migrant to our region.

  1. Hi Advait, let me be the first one to comment on your blog and congratulate you. Very lucidly written and informative. Love the fact that you wrote the Latin names of birds in captions. Most people forget them. Keep up the good work. Vikas
